Noticing the Little Things

February 2025

I'm counting this as February, since I've been thinking of this all month - it just took me a while to get it to you. Consider it a piece of old-fashioned mail that could get delayed in passage. : )

Early in the month, after a rain, when I took the dog out for a walk, I found myself fascinated by the leaves on the ground (as well as the many tiny stones in the sidewalk itself, which I had never paid much attention to).

Remarkable, right?

I had plenty of time to look since the dog and I walk slowly. He enjoys spending quite a long time sniffing each leaf and bush on the block to see what other dogs have been up to, especially after a rain.

Look at all of these individual water droplets!

Seriously - pause your scroll for a few moments and just look at all of these droplets.

Take a slow breath or two.

Look at each drop.

That day on the walk, and every time I look at these photos, I feel a different energy.

It reminded me how the world is filled with wonder.

It reminded me the power of slowing down to really notice.

It reminded me that "small things" can be gorgeous, awe-inspiring, and impactful.

What if we thought about those aspects with other things in our lives - people and activities as well as the natural world...

  • Where else is the world filled with wonder?
  • How does what you notice change by slowing down?
  • What are the "small things" you see or do which can be gorgeous, awe-inspiring, and impactful?

Wishing you moments of delightful discovery in the coming month,

Mary

July 2026 Almost every morning - if not every walk, Buddy reminds me that even when I’m really excited about something, it doesn’t hurt to pause and take things in first. For Buddy, the pause includes sniffing the air, checking if one of his doggie friends is out and about nearby, noticing who is where and what they’re doing, and ultimately deciding which way to go. For me, the pause includes taking a breath, noticing my surroundings, and being grateful for the day, the moment, the dog 😁...

March 2026 This can be a strange time of year - literally. The end of Winter. The expectations of Spring. The "spring forward" of clocks that creates time warps as states and countries shift on different days or not at all. The realization that a quarter of the year is already done. (Really, 2026?!) It's not just time that toys with our emotions. As quick examples: Current events - political, economic, and more. The growing coverage of AI with its many dominoes of impact. Even the weather:...

From The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse, Charles Mackesy

February 2026 A few days ago, I had the pleasure of sharing one of my favorite books, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse, by Charles Mackesy. I've shared it with many of you in the past. It still speaks so deeply to my heart. For those less familiar with it, this beautiful book is a story about navigating life - with the four companions sharing questions and insights, beauty and cake, and ultimately cultivating healing for each being along the journey. With the group this week, I...
